I wrote a small Oracle interface for a specific project, using Perl, and
its Oracle-extension, Oraperl. It was no trouble at all. However, writing
some general database extension would be quite troublesome. If you have
manpower to delve into Perl, I certainly would advise you to have a try
at it; it can be got at almost any archive site around the world
