I forgot to mention that if p.map thinks the driver can't handle scaled
output it (1) ignores any scaling request and does 1 panel and (2) it
doesn't produce a legend or header.

Given all the talk, is it fairly easy to modify the ppm driver, by specifying
an output paper size and resolution and therefore the number of pixels,
and having a scaled output, and therefore include a legend etc.
Could Michael or someone comment on this please.
