in GRASS 4.2.1 Source code you find an HP 500C driver:
src421/untested/driver/
The Source code package grass_src421v14.tar.gz
is available from
http://www.laum.uni-hannover.de/iln/grass/grass42/
and
ftp://hgeo02.geog.uni-hannover.de/pub/grass421/
You might use the driver directly or rewrite it to your
purpose (I hope it works).
