What you describe has already been implemented by Sue Huse and further
developed by myself. See

The code for these can be dowloaded from both of these sites.
Simon Cox
Hello,
I am very interested in finding a method to save a map produced with p.map,
as a
GIF or BMP or PCX or JPEG image. The idea is to have pretty images,
generated in GRASS, available as part of a Web page. I have seen the
visualization and image demo's available at cecer, but I can't seem to find
information concerning the methods for saving (exporting, etc) a "plotfile"
as a GIF, JPEG, etc.
My thanks to those who can help.Have a nice day,
Jerry Cox
