Now, the question is where do I find the map (file?) created with the ppm painter, so that I can convert it to a tiff file?

Painting a map with p.map and the ppm painter results in a file called
paint.ppm in the current (mostly your $HOME) directory. I think. Painting
two maps will therefore result in an overwrite unless you rename or otherwise
protect it.
