In my above question, the error message was actually:
> Graphics driver [x0] started
When I run "d.mon start=x0" the first time. The rest of the error was the sam
e and I
got a window open on my desktop. But it was NOT locked?
If I try the d.mon the second time, I got above "already running" and the res
t error
still the same.
After removing the lock file, do you still have a monitor process running?
(use ps -ef | more)
Talk to you later.

Talk to you later.I'm not sure what you mean by "removing the lock file", but
when I closed the x0
manually and left GRASS, there was NO monitor process running. Following is par
t
of list from "ps -ef":
USER PID PPID %CPU TTY TIME COMMAND
root 510 1 0.0 ?? 0:05.87 /usr/bin/X11/xdm -config /usr/l
root 5280 510 0.0 ?? 6:19.87 /usr/bin/X11/X -nice -2 -auth /
captain 7774 7925 0.0 ?? 0:00.03 sh /usr/var/X11/xdm/Xsession
root 7801 510 0.0 ?? 0:01.12 -:0 (xdm)
root 7833 1 0.0 ?? 0:00.09 /usr/bin/X11/dxconsole -geometr
captain 7921 8008 0.0 ?? 0:00.01 sh -c /usr/bin/X11/dxconsole
captain 7923 8008 0.0 ?? 0:00.92 /usr/bin/X11/mwm
root 7925 510 0.0 ?? 0:00.44 -captain:0 (xdm)
captain 8008 7774 0.0 ?? 0:00.39 dxsession
root 8009 7921 0.0 ?? 0:00.35 /usr/bin/X11/dxconsole
root 8012 8008 0.0 ?? 0:02.39 /usr/bin/X11/dxterm -ls
root 514 1 0.0 console 0:00.05 /usr/sbin/getty console console
captain 7993 8012 0.0 ttyp1 0:00.23 - (csh)
root 8064 7993 0.0 ttyp1 0:00.10 ps -ef
Actually I'm confused by "xdm" and "mdm", don't I need only one of them? Sorry
for
the basic Unix question instead of GRASS. Maybe I did some thing wrong when I
setup the pre-compiled binary of the GRASS, since the "install.script" file tha
t
comes with the binary gave me an error:
syntax error at line 177: `end of file' unexpected
and I could't fix it so that I did the install manually by running the sections
of
the install.script (creating monitorcap, fifo, linking etc). Is there anything
more that need to be done?
Thanks for any help!
