ps.map error -> PS-PAINT Scale?

I had a similar problem before but didn`t get an error message about
floating exception . . .

But check your $GISBASE/etc/paint/ps.devices and make sure there are no leading
blanks of tabs on any of the lines.

I am trying to get the ps.map utility to generate a postscript file
of a raster map and am getting the following error:

  PS-PAINT: scale set to 1 : ?.
  Floating exception(coredump)

Any suggestions? I have tried to play with the scale settings with
no luck!! We are running Grass4.1 on an HP platform.
