I am unable to select a printer using ps.select

You need to define your ps.devices in $GISBASE/etc/paint/ps.devices
directory!
You can use ps.select -l to list the available ps.devices
-p prints the currently selected device.
ps.select painter=the_one_that_you_define would select the new ps.device
If you've already done all the above, I don't have any thing else to
tell you :=)
