r.covar / r.in.hdf

Hi,
I have questions regarding to programs:

r.covar:
  Do I understand it right, that using the -m flag will include
  zero values from the datasets in the computation but the mask
  is still valid (zero in the area of interest will be taken into
  account ,but everything "not visible" / masked not) ?

r.in.hdf:
  I want to import HDF datasets from CDROM, distributed by the
  NSIDC (National Snow and Ice Data Center
  http://www-nsidc.colorado.edu/) with datasets in a polar-
  stereographic projections. The datasets are centered on the
  poles and cover regions up to
  g.region reports:

    CURRENT REGION: N=60S S=80S RES=0:06 ROWS=200
                E=45E W=45W RES=0:20 COLS=270
    PROJECTION: 3 (Latitude-Longitude)
    ZONE: 0

  r.in.hdf reports:

Reading HDF file "/hosts/body/CDROM/s3b/1997/apr/970401.19h"
rows = 332, cols = 316
Writing GRASS output file: hdf.rast01
WARNING: G_set_window(): Illegal latitude for North

  Does anybody have a suggestion what is going on here?

Sincerly and thanks in advance for any reply,

  Stephan
