raster to vector

Can anybody tell me if it is possible to create a vector file from a
raster file, in GRASS 4.0

I need to create a contour map from a raster file showing elevation.

I cannot immediately see any straight forward way of doing this. Am I
missing something obvious ?

I think you are... have you tried r.contour? That sounds like what you want.

  There is a tool made specifically for this called r.contour! Rick

As far as I can see from my manuals etc. r.contour must be a feature of
GRASS4.1 since I cannot see anything about it for version 4.0. Is this
correct?
