I'm using MySQL 4.0 with the mysql-connector-java-2.0.14-bin.jar jdbc
connector.
It correctly deals with special characters using the following connection
string:
jdbc:mysql://127.0.0.1/<database_name>?autoReconnect=true&useUnicode=true&ch
aracterEncoding=utf-8&mysqlEncoding=utf8
Please note that you'll have to substitute & with & in config.xml
