RE: [Geoserver-devel] Got design?

Hi guys,

This sounds like a great idea.

My preferences:

* No applets - HTML and Javascript should be enough for any web based admin tool.
* I like help boxes in the form of tool tips for web forms. So when you hold the mouse over a form field you get info about what is supposed to go in it. There should also be help links to supplement this.
* Must think about security aswell.
* Should be cross browser capable using www standards. (XHTML/CSS)

Websphere App Server has a pretty nice web admin tool. It has a tree like menu on the left. For Geoserver something like:

- Service Info (common & global config)
- Catalog
   - Db Connection 1
   - Db Connection 2
   - ...
- Feature Types
   - Feature type 1
   - Feature type 2
   - ...
- WMS
- WFS

This can be done in HTML pretty easily.

One nice thing would be the ability to store config info in a database. This could be done by having the config loading object abstracted away from the config objects themselves. Then you can have data access objects that load the config from both XML files and DB tables and a config options to switch between the two. This should probably be low priority though.

Specifically design for the web administration tool. If you
do not have solid design ideas as to how you'd like it to
work, we'd would at least like to hear of other web based
tools (and specifically application admin
tools) you've worked with, and what you liked about them,
what you didn't.
Are web-based forms enough? Do you like applets? How simple
should it be? Are lots of help boxes useful, or is a simple,
intuitive design enough? Should the config tool be enabled
by default? ect. If you know a product that you really like
how they do things let us know, and we can investigate making
GeoServer's config similar.
