RE: [Geoserver-devel] Oracle Support

Mark,

I’ve completely given up trying to use the web configuration for oracle - I get the same message as you. If you try setting things up manually, though, it still doesn’t work, but you do get new and interesting error messages to confuse you

I am concerned about this as well. I am a new user, just installed GeoServer for the first time. I love the concept, but the first thing I tried to do was create a connection to an Oracle Spatial database I have here and I haven’t been able to get the parameters to be processed. I was thinking that I was doing something wrong, but John’s email has me thinking that the Oracle support isn’t there yet? Can someone clarify this for me? Thx.

Please could somebody tell me what the current status is of Oracle in geoserver.

Geoserver appears very promising for the applications I develop, but if I can’t get it to work with oracle, it’s useless for me.

And yes, I have followed the available instructions to get it working. And where did the gt2-oracle-spatial.jar go?

Ah, I didn't know that I had people who were testing out oracle who
would be willing to give feedback. The big problem is that none of the
current main geoserver developers have an oracle spatial database to
play with. I tried to set one up several times a long while ago on
linux but it just kept falling over on the install, and just don't have
the time to set it all up right now. And the contributor of the oracle
stuff, who the list usually relies on to carry the oracle load, is
really busy on his main work. So if you have time the next few days
I'll do what I can to help you out, make it one of my top priorities,
as I didn't even know that oracle was completely not working. If you
know of an oracle install that I could connect to from outside that
would be the most helpful, as I can try it out myself. Barring that
you can send me detailed error messages and logs, and I can try to
diagnose the problem.

I did update the advanced.xml document in cvs to reflect the latest
changes that I know about, but there are things I'm not sure of since I
can't test it myself.

The one thing I do know is that the gt2-oracle-spatial jar is no longer
being included in the install, because it leads to the web application
some how malfunctioning. I didn't quite understand this, Jody, could
you explain more?

The thing to do now is to download the latest geotools release which is
available at
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/geotools/geotools-bin-2.0-B3.zip?download
, and then copy the gt2-oracle-spatial jar into WEB-INF/lib directory
of the expanded war, along with the two other oracle jars needed (these
were required before, I believe). If working from the source and
building the war yourself then you need to comment out the line of the
war build that says '<exclude name="**/gt2-oracle-spatial.jar"/>', so
that it gets copied over to the war.

I believe the real fix will be when the oracle datastore factory can
detect if the extra jars are present (which actually shouldn't be too
hard to do, I can try to get it working). Though actually putting the
gt2-oracle-spatial jar in without the other too seems a bit much,
perhaps we should just make the oracle spatial jar downloadable from
sourceforge, with instructions there?

Ok, let's move this discussion over to
http://jira.codehaus.org/secure/ViewIssue.jspa?key=GEOS-149 , so we're
not flooding the list. I'll post these comments there too, but yeah,
I'd love to get to the bottom of this issue, and I apologize for not
giving it more attention, but it's quite hard when I don't have an
oracle install.
