The trunk version of MapBuilder now has a ship tracking demo which uses an
RSS feed to plot the tracks. Something you may want to consider.

Is that real time data? I can't see right away how that can
be accomplished in real time.

This one is interesting. Maybe possible routes can be
returned from a rule set in an SLD file.

As part of my work at PennState we’re building GeoRSS feeds from APRS data (sort of real time tracking data) - I’m about to start work on writing a georss datastore for GeoTools/GeoServer which might be a way for you to go.

Thanks for all of your answers. I'm very impressed with your help , as now the mess in my mind isn't so big. I've been reading the OpenGIS® Specifications <http://www.opengeospatial.org/specs/?page=specs>, is that a good way to start understanding how GeoServer and clients work?.
I'm taking a look to GeoRSS, if i can help you in some way, please tell me, and Carolyn, thanks for your point of view.
PD: Sorry for my english.
