Craig:
Your questions seems to be related to the multi-attribute issue. Using
an internal or external relational database engine may be the best way to handle
this sort of problem. GRASS doesn't use an internal relational database engine
to manage its databases. However, GRASS 4.1 release has included a set of DBsql
tools to allow you interfacing your multi-attribute data in a RDBMS directly to
GRASS without data structure conversion. Currently, the relational database
engine supported is INFORMIX SQL, but it could be extended to some others.
ARC/INFO uses its internal relational database engine to manage its
multi-variable databases.
