I have just completed my dissertation on public access to spatial
information for environmental planning, and I am starting to look for a
job. I would like to be involved in information support for
environmental protection or natural resource planning, using GIS and/or
the Internet.
I am interested in working in the public sector, either the
government (NPS, USFS, NBS, etc) or for a non profit environmental NGO
(Sierra Club, Wilderness Society, etc). I suspect that given the
current financial climate, contracting for the federal government may be
more feasible than being a direct employee. In the best of all possible
scenarios I would live in a rural moutainous area, such as in Alaska or
Montana.
My skills center on GIS (I have 6 years of experience with GRASS)
and the Web (I wrote an http interface to GRASS, called GRASSLinks). I
have a wide knowledge of the ecological and physical sciences and
environmental planning. Both GRASSLinks and my resume are accessible
from my home page (http://www.regis.berkeley.edu/sue).
I am looking for ideas on finding a governmental (or NGO) job:
Where are some good places to look for posted job openings?
Does anyone know of current openings along these lines?
Are there specific offices I should contact or list with?
What types of exams will I need to take?
What are the standard forms?
Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Please respond to me directly: sue@ced.berkeley.edu
Thanks!
