In spite of suggestions from David Houlder and others I have not succeeded
in getting our HP XL300 to accept Postscript output from ps.map.

We have a HP Painjet XL which and gave it connected to the serial port of
an IPC running SunOS 4.1.3 (and previously, 4.1.1). The following are a
couple of entries from out printcaps:
#
# HP-Paintjet XL colour plotter connected to ttya

:ms=ixon,-echo:\
:sh:sf:sb:rw: \
:if=/usr/local/lib/psif:\
:fc#0177777:fs#003:
The dip-switches on the plotter are set up to use 19200 baud, even parity
and Xon/Xoff handshaking, the laser are set to 9600 baud and Xon/Xoff. Note
that for the postscript entry, the rw flag is used so that error messages
can be sent back. The file /usr/local/lib/psif is just a filter for converting
non-ps files into ps.
Hope these might give you a few more ideas ......
