Unpacking my Troubles

Greetings from Idaho,

I am unable to execute any of my XGRASS files since they all appear to be
in a packed format. The reason I say "appear" to be is that they have a
".z" extension to the file name. This is the way that they were taken off
a tape from our National Cartographic and GIS Center. When I try to unpack
them I get the message "Not in a packed format" or "File name too long", the
latter coming when I try to unpack the xgrass4.1.exe file. So, thinking
that the files may be in a compressed format, I tried the uncompress command, only to receive the message that a file
"xgrass4.1.exe.Z" does not exist. I thought pack made a ".z" extension and
compress made a ".Z" extension. After that, I tried the pack, unpack,
compress, and uncompress commands on the system and all ran well. I would
really like to un-whatever those files to take a look at XGRASS and do nothave ftp access to INTERNET to download any other files. I am running on a SPARC10
with SUN OS and MOTIF.

I would appreciate any helpful suggestions. I really have faith in the
support that is generated by this bulleting board!
