Ive loaded down the files from the USGS for new jersey
from edcftp.cr.usgs.gov. They load up fine to grass
but Im a little confused as to the coordinate
system. The readme file states that it is a ground
planimetric corrdiate system measured in feet.

Is this UTM, state planer, or what?

For an area in the newark-e_NJ map I get x,y's with
542662.61 4537522.04.

any help would be appreciated

This is a stinker. Using -74d10'w 40d44'n as a location for Newark
I get UTM, zone 18 coordinates for NAD83 of:

570366.69 4509489.15 (meters)

or

570368.57 4509277.73 (meters)

for NAD27. Neither looks very close.

Using New Jersey State Plane (NAD83):

8943953.57 5062476.70 (us-ft)

or

8902848.13 5062434.63 (us-ft)

NAD27. Even less close.

But given no other information or better test coordinates, I
would have to assume that the data is in UTM, zone 18, and in meters.
Datum unknown.
