About removal of depressions in DEM's:
In the "Related" part of GRASS is a collectione of programs for distributed
hydrological modeling (its called "ANSWERS"). One of these programs is called
"r.fill.dir" and should create depressionless DEM's.
I have not tested it but it might be what you are looking for. The source is
located under /grass/grass4.1/release/related on the moon.

John,
In the rsc.src contributed code directory distributed with GRASS
there should have been some code on a water quality assessment tool called
WRAT. One of the modules within this model, accepts a DEM as input and
outputs an idealized DEM with no pits or depressions.
If you do not have this code and cannot find it let me know and
I will try to get you the binary.
