Region settings were ok, and I tried r.compress etc. Both files are
compressed automatically by GRASS, but the compressed file size is slightly
different, although the data is absolutely the same. Perhaps GRASS uses two
different ways to compress the data.?

Assuming that Stefan didn't change the region parameters in between the
two displays, the only thing I can think of is that the first version
(created by v.to.rast) is uncompressed, while the second (created by
r.mapcalc) is compressed. Note that I didn't check this out...Martijn van Leusen
