vector polygons

hi y'all,

i was wandering is there a way to convert a vector polygon drawn by the user
on a "background" raster layer into a binary (1 on the inside, 0 on the outside)
layer of its own?

this may be a simple question, i would like to know the answer before i plunge
into the GRASSy knoll.

thanks

In v.digit, label the vector polygon as category 1. Run v.support. Run
v.to.rast (be sure that your region has appropriate coordinates and resolution.
Remember, all raster operations are dependent on your current region!). Voila!
