Studied geosciences/geophysics at university when GPS satellite technology was still encrypted and before smart phones and google maps. Mapped a lot of US geology with Brunton and colored pencils wandering around outside. Seismic data at my first post graduation job was stored in a huge library and plotted on long paper scrolls. Colored pencils were also involved. Along the way I discovered a company named Google made a coordinate projection called Web Mercator that turned the CAD engineering prints I was working on (for Google Fiber funnily enough) into slightly shrunken prints while distorting every footage annotation distance so nothing was correct due to the unique qualities of the Web Mercator projection that makes maps with scales and distances completely off sometimes by as much as 40 km. Because it was designed for the internet. My last job entailed mapping weather data online and finding that javascript mapping libraries don’t bother with projecting elipsiods onto the 2D plane. They use Web Mercator because Google did it. And that’s why engineering surveys are not done using internet devices. They walk the boundaries with a measuring chain on site.
