Ti ringrazio

Please excuse my ignorance on this subject; I need to ask for a clarification.

ArcView can read raster images in all SRSs - but you said to be sure it can “ask GeoServer to do the reprojection”. By that, do you mean that ArcView must initiate (request) the reprojection process each time it needs the imagery? Or can one set GeoServer so that it provides a constant stream of reprojected data?

Let me give an analogy - does GeoServer function like a spring flowing continually from the ground, or like a kitchen faucet which must be turned on each time a cup of water is needed?

Here is the way we would hope that GeoServer could be used:

Greetings from a GeoServer newbie -

My question is:

If we access WMS raster imagery (which is in Mercator projection EPSG:3857) using GeoServer, can we set GS to reproject the imagery into State Plane GA West NAD83 for use in ArcView 3x?

Then will GS “re-serve” the WMS imagery on demand as a user pans/zooms?

The reason for the query - we’re considering subscribing to the new Bing/DigitalGlobe 30cm imagery via WMS, and have 2 users with ArcView 3x, which can NOT do on-the-fly reprojection. Upgrading them to ArcGIS 9/10 is not an option for us.

The folks at MapSavvy WMS (OnTerra) suggested using a chain service such as GeoServer.

GeoServer can do on the fly reprojection of raster data and can do so over WMS services too, but before

investing into a subscription I would double check that:

  • ArcView can actually request WMS layers in a SRS other than the native one (that is, it can ask GeoServer

to do the reprojection)

  • The output quality is suitable for your needs (reprojection often comes with a reduced quality output)

Cheers

Andrea
