I need to log into the machine to take a closer look. It doesn't look like our ssh
key or our normal "osuadmin" user is on the system. Can you please add it
and use the following ssh key?

Works!
Looks like this system has 6 slots which are all currently filled with 480G 2.5"
SATA Intel SSD's. So you can't add anymore, but you could replace some. How
would you like to proceed?

Oh didn't realize they were SSDs so it's a combo of RAID1 and RAID 5 config I see.
Ideally we'd want to have at least 6 TB of workable disk space. Is it possible to replace some of the disks but not all, or you think it's bad to have a mix of disks.

Dear Lance
We are planning to finish the mail server movement this weekend, then osgeo6
machine we can:
- install an additional disks
- format and install the OS needed for virtualization
We need to buy the additional disks, can you help us with the specifications
based on the hardware we have. We at least need 2 for RAID.

So currently this is how the RAID is split:
md0 : active raid1 sdf1[1] sde1[0]
78084096 blocks super 1.2 [2/2] [UU]
Which volume(s) do you want to increase the capacity on? I'm assuming it's
anything on the "ogdata" volume group which is the RAID5.
We could expand the space of that online, however it would require replacing all
four disks with the same size disk. We would have to replace them one by one
allowing the RAID to rebuild. The last replacement should allow us to expand the
pv and vg.
Does this help?

We want the whole server reformatted so what is currently there is irrelevant.
No need to try to salvage any data.
We switched over mail and lists on that server already to osgeo9 over the weekend.
We plan to keep osgeo6 live for perhaps another week or so and then have you shut it off.
We have a backup of all the pieces we cared to keep already.
Right now we are just trying to figure out how much we want to spend for disks on this server
Vs. how much space we'll be able to expand.

Well that makes it easy
The only requirements you need is that the disks need to be SATA and 2.5" form
factor. Other than that, anything should work.

We would use size 2TB disks: $186 * 6 = $1116 Will give us 12TB space which
I think will be at least 6TB of usable space (RAID would take the other 6TB)
Keep in mind we are throwing out osgeo3 and osgeo4 (which has all the
backups, staging) So we do need the space

My only concern is what Grant mentioned
that these disks are really not meant for server use and that we should look for Pro or Data
Center editions disks from resellers.
I'm not sure of reliable resellers though and an unreliable one is probably worse than getting not optimal disks.
Grant,
You have any thoughts on good resellers. I don't think we want to spend more than $2000 on these disks
Given we might not have use for this server after a year or so.

Looks good from my point of view.

Do you NEED SATA or SAS?
There are quite a few Samsung 860 Pro SATA disks available on ebay.
I've bought from this reseller in the past and they seem reputable:
The remaining endurance / write capacity is important, unfortunately
not stated by listing.
Firmware easily available, but may need to flashed from ISO when
connected to SATA controller (not hardware RAID)
They also have larger Samsung disks, but no direct experience with this model:
Firmware is harder to find, but few forums have links.
