Not strictly a GIS-software topic, but it comes up every field season on my team, so I’ll leave some notes here in case they save someone money.
A lot of the hardware we lean on for fieldwork — small mapping drones, decent optics, handheld units, rugged bags and tripods — is cheapest bought secondhand inside Japan. The domestic used market is enormous and, unlike a lot of Western resale, items are usually described honestly and priced low. Over the last couple of seasons I’ve kitted out a good chunk of our field bag this way.
Where I actually look
- Yahoo Auctions Japan — the deepest pool of used drones (DJI Mini/Mavic bodies turn up constantly), optics, and job-lots.
- Mercari Japan — huge consumer volume; good for single items like binoculars, monoculars, and small tripods.
- Hard Off — the nationwide secondhand chain. Their “junk” bins are a goldmine for cables, chargers, cases and the occasional working body for a few hundred yen. Always worth a rummage.
- Suruga-ya / other used specialists for graded, fixed-price gear.
The catch, and how I get around it
Almost none of these sites ship overseas, and most won’t take a foreign card or address. I use a Japanese proxy-buy service that purchases on my behalf and reships. The two things that actually matter for this use case:
- Consolidation — win a drone one week, a set of binoculars the next, and ship them together; it cuts international postage a lot.
- A free storage window — lets me batch a whole season’s finds before one shipment.
Service fees are modest (as low as ¥200/order on the one I use) and you pick the carrier (EMS/DHL/etc.).
Two gotchas for fieldwork specifically
- Voltage — Japanese chargers are 100V. Anything USB-C (DJI, most modern kit) is fine, but older AC bricks want a converter.
- Drone import/registration is your own country’s problem — check the rules before you buy, not after it lands in customs.
For reference, these are the live listings I keep an eye on for used mapping drones (mostly DJI Mini/Mavic bodies in the affordable range) and for binoculars and field optics (Nikon/Olympus/Kenko glass turns up cheap).
