FOSS4G.org mailboxes

It's been brought up for this ticket

https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo/ticket/2997

that we need a better solution for foss4g.org mails.

Right now what we do is every year, we just set up aliases and the
conference groups need to set up their own mail accounts to share history
etc.

So there is a need for real mailboxes to simplify the process.

Some options

1) Setup a Google Mail org for foss4g.org (we may or may not be able to get
a non-profit plan for this), but I don't think we should count on that.

2) Setup our own mail infra. Sandro I was thinking if you want to
experiment with containerizing a mail server, this might be a good one, as
it's separate from osgeo.org, but has a more pressing need for real mail
boxes.

Thoughts everyone?

Thanks,
Regina

Hi Regina,

Here is another option for you to consider: Rackspace Email https://www.rackspace.com/applications/rackspace-email#pricing

3$USD/month per mailbox with 25GB storage each. Users can use the webmail interface or their mail client of choice via IMAP. I've been using it with some of my domains for many many years so I know it's reliable.

Much more affordable than Google Mail if all you need is email, and much less trouble than having to maintain your own mail servers, spam filters and all.

I think I'd still prefer Gmail, even though it is twice the price.
Mostly I've just had some really bad experience with Rackspace since all the switching of hands of ownership and observing the IT support
drop.
Granted the clients I was helping with were doing more with Rackspace than just mail.
But the whole experience just soured me completely against Rackspace.

Fair enough. I use both Google Workspace and Rackspace Mail today for different purposes and am happy with both. My main point for this thread is that any hosted mail service is better than having to deal with your own mail servers, spam filters, dealing with IP blacklist system, etc (I used to do that myself ~20 years ago and would never go back there).

Cheers

For what is worth, I've been using Zoho Mail recently and works pretty well. Support took a bit to answer my initial questions but not too much.

The smallest plan is 5GB per user and 0.90€/month, for web and IMAP access on custom domain.

I've used Zoho in past for bug tracker. I have no negative opinions about them

That said you know if the Mail Lite plan allows email aliases.

I'm thinking at least for FOSS4G, we'd probably be having something like 5 users and each user might have multiple aliases like grant@foss4g.org etc.
I don't see it on the list of features for that plan, but don't see it on any so maybe it's a given.

For the other 2 plans, they are close enough in pricing to Gmail, that I'd still feel safer going with Gmail since everyone is already familiar with that.

Thanks,
Regina
