[GeoNetwork-devel] CFV: HTML 5 UI

Dear PSC,

Please check for voting this proposal
http://trac.osgeo.org/geonetwork/wiki/Html5UI

This is a UI (based on the one developed for
http://nationaalgeoregister.nl) using widgets and HTML5. Also improves
jeeves on redirections.

https://github.com/geonetwork/core-geonetwork/pull/81

See screenshots on http://trac.osgeo.org/geonetwork/wiki/Html5UI#Proposal

Hi Maria, thanks for the proposal. I think it’s good to add this new UI to GeoNetwork so +1 for me.

Then some more general question regarding UI:

  • should we add this html5 UI as a choice in the installer ? or even make it the default UI ? and add this to 2.10.x if PSC vote for it
  • at some point we’ll probably need to reduce the number of UI to maintain : classic and 3 widgets apps

Cheers.

Francois

Agree, I think we should at most stick to classic and one widget app, otherwise having several apps seem to me a bit confusing. And if possible I think the best should be just decide for one of the options (classic/widgets) only (but this is just my opinion)

Cheers.

Dear PSC, any comments or vote on Maria's proposal ?

Then 2 questions:
1) should we include this UI in 2.10.0 release (next and last RC
planned thursday) ?

2) which UIs should be proposed as a choice in the installer and which
one to use as default ?
* classic gui
* widget / tab layout (not really maintained)
* widget / sliding layout (maintained)
* widget / html5

Looking forward to your votes & feedback.

Thanks.

Dear François,
The GUI proposal has a +1 from me.

I have asked our designer to work on a new styling and graphics for that GUI. I hope we can integrate that during the RC period still. But a last RC on Thursday may in that respect be a bit risky. At the same time those graphics and CSS changes should be relatively trivial. I hope a design can be ready within a week.

My preference is also to then make the widget / html5 the default choice in the installer. The tab layout could be removed as far as I'm concerned. It makes sense to reduce the number of GUI's to maintain. We should even cut further in my opinion. Maybe that could be done in a 2.12 release so we can stick to just one or max two GUI's.

Is this feasible and acceptable to you François?

Thanks,
Jeroen

Hi François and all,

It seems quite odd to integrate a new GUI in a third and last RC…
But at the same time this new UI could be an interesting and valuable add for 2.10…

I would be in favor of an integration but maybe it’s worth the effort to make two more RC???

Concerning the choice in the installer, “not maintained” UI(s) should be remove? don’t you think?

Hi François, Mathieu and others,
I agree that it makes sense to have another RC after integration.

The new GUI has been operational in the Dutch National Georegistry ( http://www.nationaalgeoregister.nl ) for some time already and we have removed some of the tricky bits from that GUI for this GeoNetwork version.

So we do believe it is a solid UI to be integrated. And yes, it would be good to have a little bit more testing time before making it final

Cheers,
Jeroen

···

My 2 cts,

Mathieu

Hi all,

not a big fan of adding new feats in the RC, so for me it's +1 if also having
more RCs.

   Ciao,
   Emanuele
