[GeoNetwork-devel] Config.xml for languages

Hi list (& happy new year 2oo7),

I’m currently working on the integration of thesaurus manager into Geonetwork.

For thesaurus editing, I need to have a list of languages available for user.

I would like to change the config.xml for language which is :
en
which only set up the default language as “en” for example.

by something like :

en
fr
es
cn

which will set :

  • default language “en”
  • language available for thesaurus edition “en” and “fr”
  • languages available for the application : “en”,“fr”,“es”,“cn”.

That way we could also manage to remove language from the menu using the config.xml and not using the XSL banner.xsl.

Any comments ?

I hope to be able to have a first online demo for thesaurus next week.
Cheers

Francois

Hi François,

Happy New Year to you too!

If I understand you correctly, you want to have a more or less complete list of language codes like
"en", "fr", etc, to add them to config.xml, right?

Those are defined by ISO, and more or less copied by IANA (USA) for web/XML use.
Check out for instance:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_639 and the further links on that page.

Greetings,

Tim

Patrizia, we already have long name in the main page. Do you know other
pages which are displaying short name ?

Not really Tim, I would like to have a list of languages supported by the
current node and that configuration should be set up easily by the
administrator. We already have a complete list of languages in the ISO19115
schema.

For instance, if you want to change default language, you need to edit the
config.xml; if you want to hide or add languages in the banner, you need to
update the banner.xsl; and now I need a list of language available for
thesaurus.
So I would prefer to have all this options into the config.xml.

Clearly we will continu to use ISO_639 ... and maybe move to alpha-3 code
space ...

OK, François. Now I understand.
My mistake for not remembering that ISO19115 already supports ISO 639.

I agree that it is a good idea to put all language settings (for banner, default language, thesaurus)
in the same place, i.e. config.xml.

Grtz,

Tim

Hi Francois,

in geonetwork 2.1 there is a table, named 'Languages' with the entries
you need.

Cheers,
Andrea

Hi andrea…

This new update for geonetwork (2.1) is going to be ready to see or a least a list with all the new stuff and changed stuff soon?

We are working to put this tool in a big scale in México, and we are investigating if we need to make some changes to the actual tool, but it seems that you guys are doing something that we like to know what exactly you are doing. :stuck_out_tongue:

Tkx for everything… happy New Year…
