Dear all,
I've send emails before on the planning that needs to be started for GeoNetwork opensource 3.0. Also some more planning for version 2.1 is required, although that version is set for the largest part and will be released in beta in about 2.5 weeks.
The strategy for version three will be to split the server and client parts of GeoNetwork, making it easier to use or customize the client side of the application or even completely ignore the client part and use the server alone as the catalog provider.
The most important two things I would like to get feedback on now are:
Portlet framework:
We will possibly move to a portlet based client. This client would use web services provided by the server. Some groups have already evaluated different portlet environments that could be used.
- We would be interested in those evaluations as I sense that people prefer Liferay over JBOS Portal
Catalog framework:
We will possibly move towards an ebRIM based catalog. This will be a significant upgrade with equally significant benefits related to extensibility and interoperability. The upgrade would be in line with the OGC strategy as we see them developing now, supported by several other major GeoNetwork partners. It would be good to have some comments on that strategy too.
Have a nice weekend, ciao,
Jeroen

Based on the OGCs communications it sounds like ebRIM is a proper profile to ISO 19115…? So, there’s no problem for those who already invested in catalogues based on the ISO metadata model, right?
Is there someone who could summarize the conceptual and technical differences between ebRIM and ISO 19115 (and related) specs?

It is not as trivial as that I’m afraid
The metadata standard is obviously identical, but the way to interact with the server, and the way metadata is managed internally is different.

I’m happy to hear others comment here too! But one of the big advantages is that the ebRIM catalog will be more flexible to be extended with new content types. This allows for instance to quickly add for example Contacts to the catalog and query specifically for contacts, or interact with one type of content in multiple ways. At the same time, the main operations on the catalog are always the same. You deal with other types of objects (records or whatever you name them) that can be queried in different ways.
An ISO 19115 profile for ebRIM is currently under development in OGC.
Ciao,
Jeroen

Hi Stefan,
the ebRIM is only a relational data model for the registry that allows strong
search power and metadata classification flexibility. But this regards the
registry (i.e. the catalogue) and not the repository (the way you store
metadata). This means that you can have an CSW/ebRIM profile for any
kind of metadata.
You can get more info on ebRIM on the OASIS site
(http://www.oasis-open.org)
Cheers,
Andrea
