Hi Federico
You need to backup the database, check the related documentation to the database you use and the data directory. You can find documentation about the data directory in http://geonetwork-opensource.org/manuals/trunk/eng/users/maintainer-guide/installing/customizing-data-directory.html?highlight=data%20directory
By default it’s stored in geonetwork/WEB-INF/data, but is recommended to configure to an external folder. Possibly a configuration like this is the best (from http://geonetwork-opensource.org/manuals/trunk/eng/users/maintainer-guide/installing/customizing-data-directory.html?highlight=data%20directory#advanced-data-directory-configuration):
-Dgeonetwork.dir=/data/catalogue
-Dgeonetwork.schema.dir=/app/tomcat/webapps/geonetwork/WEB-INF/data/config/schema_plugins
Use your custom paths. But this way, all the data directory is moved to a custom folder, while the metadata schemas are taken from the deployment, that is usually what you’ll want when upgrading to newer versions. The exception to this can be if you have custom changes in the metadata schemas.
If you have any customisation to the web UI, you’ll need to backup also.

Jose García
