[GeoNetwork-devel] Question about meeting accessibility requirements

Hi All,

We've been asked to start looking at accessibility tests for
GeoNetwork, to meet upcoming EU accessibility guidelines for public
sector websites
(https://siteimprove.com/en-gb/blog/how-to-prepare-your-public-sector-website-for-the-eu-web-accessibility-directive/).

Currently GeoNetwork doesn't seem to do so well on this, and I know
there have been recent GitHub issues about it
(https://github.com/geonetwork/core-geonetwork/issues/4694 for
example).

I'm interested to know if anyone is actively working on meeting the
accessibility guidelines, mainly to avoid duplication of effort, and
perhaps to work together. We might even be able to get some funding
for this, although this is not certain yet!

We'd really like to meet the basic level by the deadline if we can,
for the public-facing pages of the site in GeoNetwork 3.10.x, like the
homepage, the search tab, the default recordview and the formatter
page linked to from the site map.

Thanks

Jo

Hi Jo,

I’m working on the accessibility of GeoNetwork on and off, not on a regular basis, but more and more. I’ve been working on the a11y (keyboard access and logical order of elements) of a GeoNetwork view we develop for GeoCat ourselves and some of that work ends up in the core product.

Right now I’m working on the user feedback functionality and forms, to improve them for core GeoNetwork.

As far as I know not a lot of people are working on accessibility (yet), so it would be great if you guys could also work on it. And if we could work together on it (or just avoid doing the same work), it would be even better.

Kind regards,

Hi Jeff and Michel,

Great- it looks as if we should definitely look at combining efforts.
I am waiting to hear back from our customer exactly what level of
compliance needs to be in place by the September deadline- then I'd
like to start a wiki page on it. Does that sound like a good first
step?

Hi Jo and Jeff,

Yes, combining efforts would be great.

The wiki sounds like a good first step. We could try to define tasks there, so people can pick one (and we avoid ‘double' work). Preferably a task that ‘fits’ in 1 pull request.

For your information, some of the things I worked on (that are not in core) and could be on the wiki:

• keyboard access for all elements
• outline styles for all elements (for when an element has the focus)
• logical [tab] order of elements (when you use the [tab] key to go through all elements)
• order of headings (H2 should follow on a H1, there shouldn’t be gaps)
• user feedback form

Hi Michel, Jeff, everyone,

I've made an attempt at a page for discussing the accessibility issues
with a link (read-only unfortunately) to my spreadsheet of results
from running the tests. Please feel free to add to it or rewrite:
https://github.com/geonetwork/core-geonetwork/wiki/202008accessibility

I'm waiting for some guidance from our customer on how much actually
needs doing in September, but haven't had anything back yet.

Thanks

Hi Jo,

Thank you for putting everything out there. I already made some PR’s related to accessibility, they are all marked with [a11y]. I will link them to the Wiki tomorrow.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi Jo,

Sorry about that- I might have to look into the gsuite permissions to
get a link you can access. I'll get back to you when I've fixed it.
