Hi,
- I am new to Geonetwork and ESRI Geoportal Server (Both it's commercial &
Open Source products).
I am caring out a comparative study between Geonetwork, ESRI Geoportal
toolkit 9.3.1 / Extension 10 (Commercial) and ESRI Geoportal Server (Open
source).
I have gone through their user & developer manuals but still there are
few things which are not clear specially at technical and architectural
level.
Please if someone one can help me with the following queries, if not all
atleast with few. It would be of great help to understanding the level of
details.
1. *What is the security at application level (e.g. Particular data
access to an individual in a group, etc.) and system level (e.g. Can
individual Nodes have full access to all hierarchies within the portal)
in Geonetwork?*
2. *****Is the security level the same in ESRI Geoportal Server (both
Commercial and Open source products) and Geonetwork?***
3. * What are the functionalities in Geonetwork that is not present in
ESRI Geoportal Server and vice versa?***
4. *Can ArcGIS Server be used with Geonetwork? ***
5. * Is Geonetwork compatible with Sun Solaris?***
6. *Other then the cost why organizations prefer open source like
Geonetwork?*
7. *What is special about Geonetwork that the organization must go for
it rather than ESRI Geoportal Server which is also an open source?*
8. ***What is the difference between ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Server
Online. (From Architecture & Services point of view)*
9. *If both are providing the same services and functionalities then why
one should opt for ArcGIS Server which is very costly and maintenance is
also an issue.*
10. *Can we also connect with other ESRI products via Geonetwork. *
* For example:
a. Direct modification of vector or raster
layer from ArcMap or any other such tool/technology
b. Directly updating Metadata from ArcCatolog
or any such other tool/technology.
c. Or any other map viewer like ArcExplorer,
ArcGlobe, ArcScene, etc.?
** 11. Can we also connect with other ESRI products via ESRI Geoportal
Server which is an open source. **

b. Directly updating Metadata from ArcCatolog

12.* If Both ESRI Geoportal i.e. commercial and ESRI Geoportal i.e.
open source provides the same services and functionalities then why
companies/organization go for the commercial which is very expensive**.*

Hi Pierre and Saher,
That is a very old comparison sheet. FGDC has a more recent comparison between multiple catalog software, but even that one is old already.
Saher, beside the notes I did send you before I think some of your questions were more suitable for an ESRI forum. They really focus on Esri products.
Kind regards,
Jeroen

Hi,
Thank you Jeroen, the notes you sent were very helpful and I'm posting the
question with little modifications to both ESRI & Geonetwork forums to get
experts ideas, as designing SDI is a big thing and we want to be clear at
each level of detail.
Pierre, I had earlier gone through the GeoSUR comparison sheet, but it
didn't answer my queries.
Please share more details which i might have missed even in my questions
and that you consider to be important for SDI.
