Hi Landry,
probably a little OT (and for sure a lot late about this), but it may be
considered the use of an external library to interact with GeoServer.
We use and maintain this one:
https://github.com/geosolutions-it/geoserver-manager
which already deals with geoserver authentication.
Heh, nice..
since i'm not the one who originally did the work, i'll defer to fxp if he wants to move to this for geoserver interaction... but the geopublisher feature in geonetwork can also work with mapserver through a geoserver-compatible rest API, so dunno if that'd cover all usecases.

The geopublisher feature was made quite long time ago in 2008 (
http://trac.osgeo.org/geonetwork/wiki/GeoServer_integration) and there was
no geoserver-manager. Emanuele, do you know if the geoserver-manager could
talk with mapserver REST API (which mimic the GeoServer one). I've no
objection for a move but I have no time to work on it.
