Dear all,
I've recently installed Geonetwork and I naturally selected 4.0.x version. However, I realize that the 3.x branch seems to be more actively developed that the 4.0.x (latest 4.0.x release is 7 months old and still have log4j2 2.7).
As version 4 is more complicated to maintain because of ES and kibana, and because those features are not very useful in my case I'd like to install version 3. So I'm wondering if both versions are meant to coexist or if one will be abandoned upon another.

Hi Charly,
That is a good question. GeoNetwork 4 is under active development and
currently in the process of being deployed in production for several users.
Its user base is still much smaller than v3 though, which probably explains
the lack of recent release and apparent activity. We at Camptocamp have
been hard at work on it and new updates should come in the first half of
2022 at least.
On the other hand, GeoNetwork 3 is deployed and running in many places
which means maintenance of this version is often critical (e.g. fixing the
log4j2 CVE).
Depending on your use case, staying on version 3 which is simpler, tried
and trusted can be a sensible choice IMO. Do keep in mind though that
jumping straight to version 4 will spare you one hefty migration and enable
you to contribute more easily, should you wish to do so!
To answer your last question, both versions will probably live alongside
for some more time, although I myself does not know what the situation will
be in the medium/long term. Only version 4 is intended to receive new
features though.
Cheers,
