[GeoNetwork-users] What are "stopwords" good for?

Hello out there!

Could somebody please give me a clue what "stopwords" are good for?

As far as I have seen in logfiles and so on, stopwords seem to be words that
somehow improve the lucene index. Lucene counts how often words are used in
the metadata. Obviously, there are words in each language which are used
quite often, but do not mean anything important. In English those are words
as "not, same, so, too, very...".

Am I right the words given as "stopwords" will not used by ranking via the
lucene indexing mechanism any more?

Greetings
Anja
