Jody here from the GeoServer project. We did not get a chance to share our “status update” in the AGM last week - so I wanted to pass on some good news.
We are now at almost 60% towards our GeoServer 3 crowdfunding activity.
I would really like to meet this funding target - and ask members of the OSGeo community to share the link with your employer and/or customers who use GeoServer.
Support: To support GeoServer 3 there is an online form, or you can contact gs3-funding@googlegroups.com to express interests.
Thank you to all the organizations that have pledged their support thus far.
Also thanks to those making individual donations: Abhijit Gujar, Laurent Bourgès.
About GeoServer 3: A lot of folks had questions about GeoServer 3 at foss4g…
We are at an interesting turning point in the Java ecosystem. Spring 5 is no longer supported, but Spring 6 requires switching from JavaEE to Jakarta EE (API break) and updating to Java 17 as the minimum.
This results in a number of changes needing to be made … at the same time!
Each on of these activities takes a lot of work, having so many at the same time (across several projects) a considerable challenge!
Faced with this amount of work the GeoServer PSC changed roadmap approach to identifying goals as sponsorship opportunities in 2024. I am proud to be part of the crowdfunding consortium of Camptocamp, GeoCat and GeoSolutions answering this challenge responsibly.
About Crowdfunding: Since this amount of work is more than any one organization has capacity for, and more then we would like to ask a single customer to pay for, a consortium has been setup as a multi-party contract. It is setup in two phases, the first where support is pledged, and a second when funding target is reached. This avoids asking anyone to pay for a partial solution.
