[Geoserver-devel] GeoServer 2.2-RC1 busted, needs redoing?

Hi,
I’ve just noticed that the GeoTools jars in the 2.2-RC1 release are all
SNAPSHOTS, which means also that the corresponding GeoTools release
(8.0-RC2 I presume) was not done either (we have been doing a release
of the two in parallel for as long as I can remember, though that was
obvious).

It seems to me the release has to be started back from square one?

Cheers
Andrea

Indeed, looks like the release was built simply from a gt revision. In particular 38823. I imagine Victor wasn’t aware that a RC release required a corresponding geotools release. I guess an alternative would be to release gt 8.0-RC2 from that revision. But I agree, should release 8.0-RC2 and then rebuild the gs release.

I am happy to redo the release but I find the task quite restrictive from my end because I lack a lot of the necessary privilege. Performing the release for GeoServer so far has been an easy task and straight forward all thanks to Justin’s script which I think is what Ben wanted to test in the first place.

I hate to have to handball this away but I will speak to Ben and perhaps it will be better for someone else with credentials to perform the release.

I have to admit it is my mistake for doing the geoserver release without the geotools release, my apologies there.

Victor I have a standing offer to release geotools if needed to support GeoServer release process. However we can set you up with permissions to make a GeoTools release; and indeed Justin has provided scripts on that side as well (which we are also trying to test).

is that the guide for releasing Geotools? When releasing GeoServer, I am missing privilege to making release in Jira and access to sourceforge(I had this when I release 2.0.2 but somehow it got removed)

I have yet to look through the release guide for Geotools. Are there updated docs for using the scripts to release Geotools or is the above one the latest? Thanks J

Yes, please set up Victor with all the permissions he needs. The purpose of this exercise is to ensure that entire process is documented and clarified, end-to-end, including the credentials needed to perform a release. The actual release itself is a secondary goal.

Victor will no doubt end up with a few stubbed toes (sorry Victor!), but the process will in future be easier, and we should be able to choose any random developer without release experience, set them down in front of a guide, and have them make a flawless release. A smooth and easy process is essential to the new time-boxed release schedule. The end goal is that Andrea, Justin, and Jody need do nothing but say "let it be done".

Kind regards,
Ben.

Since you have tried out the scripts for geoserver you may know more then me on this subject (i.e. how to run them).

Let us take this conversation over to geotools-devel so we can ask for help (indeed if you ask on that email list with your JIRA id (or xircles) I should be able to bump your access up to make a release in Jira).

Hi Justin,

Before I do anything stupid, I should skip the release in GeoServer JIRA because 2.2-RC1 has already been “released” in GeoServer Jira? What will happen if I rerun the release?

The GeoTools release is also managed by scripts similar to the GeoServer one’s.

Hey Victor,

The scripts should run ok and just remove the old artifacts. This includes the artifacts on gridlock and the ones uploaded to sourceforge.

Hi Victor,

AS I stated in a different thread I would actually prefer you hold off on putting out the release for now. Reason being that the coming switch to git is going to force a major overhaul of the release scripts, so I think for this release I am going to have to do it. Or else I fear you will go mad with things not working, like this

I thank you for the great efforts though. It would be great if you could still help with the announcements, etc…
