Should be running off default (in /var/lib/tomcat/webapps/geoserver/data).
Interesting, this could be a regression then, potentially related to one of
the last refactors
in resource store, or as an alternative (seems a bit less plausible, but
not impossible) to
the wicket upgrade.
I'd open a bug report marking it as blocker for RC1 (all regressions
normally are).
