I was unable to reproduce this failure using: mvn clean install -Prelease
Environment: Oracle JDK 1.7.0_51
Is this failure specific to OpenJDK ?

No, for me it fails with both Oracle JDK 1.7.0_51 and OpenJDK 1.7.0_51
(and I've seen the same failure on Travis in the past, too)

Considering that at least one person has “it works on my machine”, I would have to ask the question “What is different about the environments?” Could it be difference in OS, permissions? Development IDE?

In my case it's failing in both maven and the IDE, so it's not likely to be
Eclipse, but I use Eclipse Kepler SR1
The rest is Ubuntu 12.04, 64 bit, and the above mentioned JDK versions.
I work in my home folder, so I have full permissions
My hunch is that it's file system iteration order, we are probably getting
the imageio/coverage readers
iterate in a different way (believe there is nothing we can do to make that
order predictable)

Thanks Andrea, I have created a Jira issue http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-6448 so we can track this a bit more formally.
I would like to see if the issue is limited to linux or if it can be reproduced on windows as well.

I just tried changing over the geotools master build to an openjdk 7 jdk but there are rendering failures. An oracle jdk 7 vm works fine though. Going with oracle for now until told otherwise.
