I apologize for offending you, but I still strongly disagree with being called out for using “flamebait”. I was addressing a technical capability, not trying to offend a developer or critique what anybody has done or the code they have written.
The word “disable” or “disabled” can also invoke strong images:
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/it/dizionario/inglese/disabled
But we use that term constantly in this field – an interface, a port, or an account can all be “disabled”.
“Severely” is 100% a strong adverb. I was trying to sell the issue to the people who approve it, but again, it wasn’t intended to offend or hurt anybody’s feelings. If I were to say, “Not having gas in my car severely cripples my ability to drive.”, it’s not an insult against the car manufacturer, the gas or oil companies, or anyone who has ever driven the car. It’s simply a statement of fact about the car’s current capabilities, and that’s the exact same perspective I had when I wrote that sentence.
I am still fairly new to this community and trying hard to bring COG capabilities to GeoServer. I’m really hoping to be a positive presence and bring valuable contributions to the table. However in the future, if our sensibilities don’t align and there is something that is offensive or you believe can easily taken the wrong way, definitely let me know and I will be more than happy to fix it. I only ask that you don’t immediately, publicly accuse me of posting “flamebait”.
But again, I apologize to you and whoever else was offended. I simply removed the offending sentence as the point is still perfectly conveyed without it and that’s the last I’ll say about it.

Nothing is lost, but people can have different sensibilities, using strong words definitely triggers some. I find that text offensive, even if I was no involved that particular bit of code.
“The power of being able to advertise an input class is severely crippled by GeoServer’s inability to create readers with alternative input classes.”
Cripple is already a strong image, see the definition of the verb (scroll down a bit):
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/it/dizionario/inglese/cripple
However, it seems it was not enough, “severely” had to be added for good measure.
A more balanced way to convey what’s needed to support the GSIP objective could be:
“Readers can support any type of input object, but the current GeoServer code only supports interpreting the input string as a File/URL. This GSIP intends to remove this limitation with a new extensions point.”
Plain, factual, positive.
Cheers
Andrea
