Hi,
today I woke up finding that the OL navigation icons have
been modified... first off, where's the jira issue about that
change? We generate the changelogs using the jira
issues, so please try to have one for each change you make.
Secondly, the icons look good, but they have a piss poor
contrast over the nyc layer group, whilst the old ones
had decent contrast over basically any background
(see attached screenshot).
If you want to keep these icons, I'd suggest to move them
out of the map so that we don't have to adapt the maps
to the choice of colors in the navigation elements.
Or choose a navigation style that has very good contrast
no matter what's the color of the map behind it...
Cheers
Andrea

Terribly sorry. Just made JIRA ticket for this:
http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-2450
I'll make sure to follow this practice in the future.
Secondly, the icons look good, but they have a piss poor

So, while I agree that the contrast is bad in this particular case, I
have to say that I'm a bit skeptical that the old icons had good
contrast with "basically any" background. Like, really? I appreciate
the general concern though. I guess a good principle would be "solid,
darker colors are better because most styled data will be point and
line data on a white background"?

So, looking at the two options:
(1) Kick this back to designers and ask for more solid colors, or
(2) Have the navigation elements external to the map.
I don't have a strong opinion about which one we go with. I'll ask
the design team about what they have time for.
In the meantime, do should the icons should be reverted back to the
old ones? I was hoping the new icons could get pushed out with the
REST Layer About Page so that it would look coherent (see attached
screenshot), but it sounds like that might not be moving as fast as I
had been told.

If you want my honest opinion, the new icons look badly on my
XP box + zune theme (http://www.skattertech.com/media/2006/11/windowszunetheme.png),
thought I can understand they look better in a OSX environment.
But really, while beauty is in the eye of the beholder,
usability is less subjective.

Yes and no. How do they look with a google maps satellite image
in the background? That's as dark as you can find in most maps usually.
What does not stand out the most is the bar used to scroll the
zoom level and I have the impression it won't be too visible on
most non solid backgrounds.
If you want to keep these icons, I'd suggest to move them

If you move the bar outside I have no issues in keeping it as is.
But from where I stand we should not release with a zoom tool
that's hard to locate.
Cheers
