I hear you have ideas about improving the map preview, so here we go.
One thing I would like to see is some way to dynamically switch the image type
for the layers, and maybe a switch to control antialiasing, so that people can
compare the various options and see what's the best for them.
As for the rest, I'm sure you have plenty of ideas 
The preview is dinamically generated using Freemarker templates. To ease
up your work, you could redo the preview as a static html file and then
I can translate it into a freemarker template. As an alternative, I can assist
you setting up a developer enviroment so that you can play against the freemarker
template directly. Just let me know.
