When I try to create a new Image Mosaic data from a directory with several files but without existing index, GeoServer cannot create the data store.

The problem can be reproduced with the mosaic provided with the sample data like this:

  • Delete the store from GeoServer
  • In the DATA_DIR, delete the shapefiles available in the data/coverages/mosaic_sample folder
  • Create a new ImageMosaic datastore pointing to data/coverages/mosaic_sample folder : an error message is displayed and the creation fails
