Current NetCDF Output module always create NetCDF-3 files.

It would be great to start supporting NetCDF4-Classic too, which support inner compression based on HDF5 storage capabilities of NetCDF4:

We could define encoding parameters to be sent to the CoverageResponseDelegate implementation in order to choose which version of the output format and which custom parameters (such as compression levels if any) to be used.
