[Geoserver-devel] Layers groups and layers with the same name

Hi all,

It turns out that it is possible to create a layer group with the same name of an existing layer,
even if both the layer group and layer belong to the same workspace, which looks like a bug
to me.

So we may have two situations:

  1. a global layer group with the same name of an existing layer
  2. a layer group and layer in the same workspace with the same name

For both situations GeoServer is always returning the layer. In my point of view
none of this situation should be valid, no layer groups and layers with the same
name should be allowed.

Thoughts on this ?

Hi Nuno,
yes, the situation is confusing, but fixing it might do more damage than leaving it be, unless it’s done very carefully.

Since the current behavior allowed to setup these cases, I would not be surprised if there is more than one data directory
out there having conflicts like the ones you’ve described.
If checks are added:

  • they should not be running during startup/reload, or upgrades will become impossible
  • someone might rely on that for some reason, maybe best to have a way to turn them off
