The last tests are being perform this week (shout out to Niels, Lugi, Alessandro, Damiano for the manual testing ). As I understand it security-cas is the last scheduled test.
I would like to start this release on Friday - please shout out if you are trying to get a pull request in before then.

the tests that we are looking into performing are:
- CAS
- Manual Test with GeoServer manager
I am not sure we will make on time for this friday, I am not sure this
is a showstopper as we will make them anyway even if we do beta2 on
fri. If anything comes up will fix afterwards.

I have a tiny usability PR for the bin.zip {startup,shutdown}.sh (detect Java from PATH is JAVA_HOME not set) but have no feedback and need to know if it works on MacOS. It was in response to a community PR that I thought might break MacOS:

If I merge this today and kick the nightly, those with MacOS (and other Linux) could check to see if the bin.zip still starts. I think it would be a nice convenience improvement in 2.9.
The PR does not affect the Windows startup.bat; does anyone use startup.sh on Windows? Windows can now run user mode Ubuntu binaries:

Agreed it should not be a show stopper, beta is needed as we have installer / release issues to find.
