[Geoserver-devel] Re: [udig-devel] Groovy

Hi
It is a plug-in available from codehaus http://groovy.codehaus.org/eclipse.html though we have modified the build to fit our component strategy (same as yours ) and exposed a number of interfaces and embedded it into the integration bus. So far everyone involved is very pleased with it, I believe it is a candidate for the Java standard scripting language and currently forms the backbone of our automated test harness. We will put the code into the public domain ASAP, but I'm sorry to say I have not contacted the groovy project about what we are doing I will correct this over the next few days.

Nifty -

The groovy JCP has stalled (the Groovy language is still being worked on as we speak so a JCP was a bit too early IMHO). I had considered Jython as a stable alternative.

One though I have had was to adopt a common container framework with GeoServer so that scripts written in uDig could also be run within GeoServer. I know mapserver is in the throws of having a Python scripting - perhaps we could use them for inspiration (or interoptability).

I believe the mapserver scripting is in the opposite direction - having
a python script use mapserver as an "object". (ie. have write a python
script that generates a map)
