[Geoserver-devel] #roadmap update, July 14, 09

Hi all,

Start of a new release cycle so lots to discuss, here goes:

* 1.7.6 release date

   Opinions here welcome. Mark has recently let us know that LisaSoft has generously given him some time to put toward stable GeoServer releases. Which means we can probably maintain the more or less monthly cycle we have in the past. 1.7.5 was released on June 09 so a monthly cycle puts us overdue at July 09. However given the unofficial ok to drop back the release cycle to every two months we would be scheduled for a release Aug 09.

   We should probably just make this Marks decisions since he has volunteered up some time. However since I coincidently :wink: am working in the same office as him at the moment it might make sense to do the release sooner so i can walk him through the first time, since it is a bit of a process. Luckily we have been putting in some good effort into the release docs lately so they are pretty good.

* 2.0-rc1 release date

   While on the topic of release dates what do people think about a time to release 2.0-rc1? I preemptively marked it for just over 2 weeks from now (Aug 3), how do people feel about that, too soon? too late?

* 1.7.6 issue status update

   The following new features are schduled for 1.7.6 and are still open:

- http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-2605, arnek
   GetCapabilities response for gwc

- http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-2514, arneke
   GWC WMS tiling integration

- http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-516, dwins
   Packages for Linux distros

   There are also a high priority improvement still open:

- http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-2011, arneke
   Improve error logging profiles

Arne, we seem to keep pushing this one back, should we just mark it as a won't fix or something. Or push it back into the void of 1.7.x

* 2.0-rc1 issue status update

- http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-2887, jdeolive
   port all extensions from 1.7.x to trunk

- http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-3253, jdeolive
   Changing log level is not reflected until server restart

If folks could reply with thoughts about release dates, and those with open issues assigned to them could give a quick status update would be great as well.

I'd really, really like to fix the GML bindings before RC1 - the
forcing of GML schema defined objects onto JTS implementations that
are a very narrow interpretation is very limiting (kills hope of any
temporal data types using gml for example - you cant do a 1D position
on a temporal CRS because direct position is bpound to 2D geometry).

This probably can be easily fixed with some attention this week.

Given that the bindings are exercised by a large part of the
functionality, it seems safer to get this in earlier rather than
later. On the other hand, its not so scary that it needs a spearate
beta-release cycle IMHO - and we can improve the unit tests for this.

I'm fairly flexible as to the date, but I agree it would be smoother with you in the office, or at least still in the time zone. Having said that, it's more dependent on when the issues tagged for this release will be fixed or deferred.

I must say that it has been rather useful having Justin in the country. Shall we have a chat to border security? I am sure they are as good at keeping people in as out. :->

Please don't start the "app-schema totally generic is the true view of the world and what we have been doing over the last 10 years of geoserver is the 1% case" debate over and over :slight_smile:

Stating that bindings which were designed with the clear intent of narrowing what can be represented in GML to what can be represented in JTS need to be fixed is false. This is not a bug, they are like that by design. You may as well state that geotools is one big bug because it uses JTS as its geometry model.

This is an improvement or new feature as far as i am concerned. The new feature being to loosen the binding model from what is what originally designed for: providing mappings from XML types to a discrete set of java types to allow for the mapping from XML types to a single java type (complex attribute).

That said, I have agreed to spend some of my volunteer time to look into what is needed to achieve this, but as far as putting it on the road map as a potential blocker for RC1 we probably need more resourcing behind it then just what I might be able to do in my spare time.

Well none of the issues remaining are of blocker status so anything we do from now to release date would appear to be gravy. I would say that if there are resources willing to do the release and those resources would rather do it sooner rather than later I would push for sooner. But that is just my opinion. Well, nobody has jumped up to push any issues in before a release. As discussed last night, I'm going to push through a dry run before you head off up the coast. This means that I should be ready for a proper release later in the week or early next week.

Missed the thread yesterday,

GEOS-2011: The logging profiles never make it anywhere near the top of my stack, so I agree they should either be pushed back (or really far ahead, like 2.1).

GEOS-2605: It looks like I will be working on a standalone document for GWC tomorrow, so I expect to be able to close it. (Will not go straight into GeoServer's caps document, but if I have time I will look into how much work that would be.)

GEOS-2541: For 1.7.6 this is a wont-fix. When we discussed it it was under the assumption that GWC would hook into the catalog in the 1.7.x series, but that never came around. I'm increasingly convinced it's not very valuable in 2.0 either, the chances of a client just aligning itself to the right grid is rather small. Will think about it a bit more, move later today.

The release dates are fine with me, would mean one more GWC release and get the getcaps into both.

Well none of the issues remaining are of blocker status so anything we do from now to release date would appear to be gravy. I would say that if there are resources willing to do the release and those resources would rather do it sooner rather than later I would push for sooner. But that is just my opinion. We will see how others feel. If no objection we can start the 1.7.6 release train shortly while I am still in the same time zone.

Hem... ouch. I've been delaying the fix of a few issues that have to
be fixed by 1.7.6 because I was working full time on the 2.0.x series
and this news is catching me off guard.

I've fixed the most critical now:
http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-3272
and will try to close as many other regressions/major blunders as I can today.
Hopefully there are not many

Cheers

Ok, i was unaware. Were they marked as blocker or critical priority in jira? If so and I missed them I apologize.

Regardless, I don't think there needs to be a rush. If there are people still closing issues then we can simply wait. I do not believe there is any hard deadline from Mark, I simply proposed early this week since things seemed quiet.

So does perhaps shooting for a release later on in the week seem reasonable? Mark: does that work with your schedule and the time you are getting to work on the release?

I don't have a hard deadline on this; in fact not giving someone enough time to respond was my biggest concern. If I plan to start Thurday, would that be enough time for you?

Nope, they were not, I only had a jira in GeoTools, opened one in
GeoServer afterwards. Sorry about that, it seemed there was no resources
for 1.7.6 releases and I was swamped with 2.0 work so I did not set the
GS jiras in place.

I think there is only another one that I think would be nice to have fixed, which is http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-3235, that has
a patch I could not look into due to the vacation. Let's see if Mauro
can amend his patch quickly.

Yep, even tomorrow would be good I guess, I just hope to get a quick
turn around on http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-3235

Before I start the release tomorrow, I need to request commit access. In accordance with the docs at http://geoserver.org/display/GEOSDOC/1+Getting+Commit+Status, I've applied for developer status through xircles (username: mleslie). Is there anything else I need to do?

Cool, i just accepted to the request. The only other thing would be to review the more recent version of the comitting process / guidelines:

http://docs.geoserver.org/1.7.x/developer/policies/comitting.html
