ben,
i would answer 'yes' to your questions. i use geoserver in combination with cocoon for serving svg. as client i don't use mozilla but ie with adobe svg viewer. this doesn't make any difference, does it? cocoon just passes the wfs:query (i do queries by posting xml) to geoserver which returns gml. the gml is then processed by cocoon. the client finally gets svg. for me it works fine.
concerning the problems: you need a client that is able to post the queries and on the serverside (or maybe client-side?) a way to convert the gml to svg.

Some questions from a GeoServer and GML newbie:
Geoserver is now the open source OGC reference implementation for WFS, correct?
Doest that mean GeoServer is good at serving GML streams?
Does that mean GeoServer is a good server to an SVG client?
Has anyone played with using GeoServer against an SVG enabled Mozilla build?
What problems might one encounter in attempting to test such an approach?Thank you for your insights.
